At MJs, we’ve spent years developing systems to recover and recycle event carpet. More recently, through laya, we’ve been exploring how recovered materials can be transformed into new products and applications.
What we’ve learned is that creating a circular economy isn’t just challenging-it’s complicated, expensive and full of obstacles.
And that’s exactly why more businesses don’t do it.
Every Material Has Its Own Personality
One of the biggest misconceptions about recycling and reuse is that materials behave predictably.
They don’t.
Take polypropylene, the material used in our Rewind carpet range. On paper, it is highly recyclable and incredibly versatile. In practice, it has a habit of doing exactly what it wants. Different batches behave differently. Processing conditions matter. Temperature matters. Manufacturing methods matter.
A product that works perfectly as an event carpet doesn’t automatically behave as expected when transformed into furniture, eyewear or accessories.
Every new application requires testing, experimentation and often several failed attempts
before success.
Innovation Means Failure
We often showcase the finished products.
What people don’t see are the prototypes that didn’t work. The samples that cracked. The finishes that looked great in theory but not in reality. The manufacturing processes that proved too expensive or too inconsistent to scale.
Innovation is often portrayed as a breakthrough moment. In reality, it’s usually a process of learning what doesn’t work until you find what does.
The Challenge of Manufacturing in the UK
There is also a commercial reality.
If we want circular products to be successful, they need to compete in the real world.
Manufacturing in the UK brings many advantages—quality, collaboration, shorter supply chains and local expertise—but it also comes with higher production costs.
For businesses developing circular products, this creates a constant balancing act.
How do you create products that are innovative, sustainable and commercially viable?
How do you ensure that customers can afford them while still supporting local manufacturing and maintaining quality?
These are questions every circular economy business must answer.
Building Systems, Not Products
The biggest lesson we’ve learned is that circularity is not about creating a single product – it’s about creating a system:

Sorting.
Decontamination.
Processing.
Manufacturing.
Distribution.
Product use.
Recovery.
Every stage needs to work. If one part of the chain breaks down, the entire model becomes difficult to sustain.
This is why collaboration is so important. No single organisation can build a circular economy alone.
It requires manufacturers, designers, recyclers, event organisers, venues and customers all playing their part.
Why We Keep Going
Reading this, you might wonder why anyone would bother.
The answer is simple.
Because the alternative is accepting that materials only have one life.
We don’t believe that’s good enough.
The challenges are real, the costs are real, the technical hurdles are real.
But so is the opportunity.
Every successful prototype, every new manufacturing process and every product that finds a second life proves that circularity can work.
Not because it’s easy but because it’s worth doing.
